Michael Foster Memorial Scholarship

The Michael Foster Memorial Scholarship is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for members of the University of Oxford.

This scholarship is not being offered in the 2024/25 academic year.

The scholarship is intended to enable the award holder to undertake study or research in a field of their choice, at any university, excluding art and music academies, in Germany.

Duration:Usually one year, however may be extended at the discretion of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
Value:The scholar will receive a monthly maintenance grant. A small grant will be paid at the beginning of the award period to cover incidental expenses and books. An additional grant will be paid to assist with travel expenses. Scholars who are married before taking up the award will receive an additional allowance, if accompanied by their spouse. The grant includes insurance cover for accident, illness and personal liability

Other criteria:

Candidates will normally be expected to show a reasonable proficiency in the use of the German language, but a further grant may be made available to candidates who do not have a good knowledge of German to enable them to attend a language course in Germany at the beginning of their stay.

Candidates’ proposed programmes of research must be such that they can best be carried out at a German university or other institution of higher learning. Successful candidates will be those whose studies and personal development have most to gain from a period of study or research in Germany.

Applicants are advised to contact their proposed host institution before submitting their application.

Other information

The scholarship is not tenable concurrently with any other travelling award, and it should be noted that the scholarship does not include payment of any University of Oxford fees for which the scholar may be liable for whilst in Germany. Candidates who hold UK Research Council studentships may however apply for suspension of their awards and suspension of status to enable them to take up the scholarship if selected.

Candidates will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • the excellence of their academic career and performance to date (in the case of current undergraduates one would normally expect a predicted 1st class degree)
  • the coherence, interest and feasibility of their project or proposed programme of study and their qualifications for that programme; and, for candidates embarked on a research degree, their likely contribution to the subject
  • the value of a stay at a German university for their career plans and/or research project.

The combined German Scholarships Board hope to be able to award at least one of the German Scholarships (Michael Foster or Hanseatic) to an undergraduate in their final year provided someone of sufficient calibre puts themselves forward.
