Hi my name is Jennifer. I'm from China and I'm in my first year studying English Language and Literature. So today I'm going to discuss the extra-curricular side of my application to Oxford. There's a myth that when Oxford reads your application, what they're looking for is an extremely well-rounded candidate with lots of extra-curriculars in a diverse range of areas but this is simply not true. What makes Oxford so unique is its heavy emphasis on academics, so predominantly what they're interested in first and foremost is who you are as a scholar, so when your application is read your extra-curriculars will not be taken into account unless they're relevant to your course or can demonstrate some of the selection criteria specifically listed by Oxford pertaining to your course. So let me give you an example. When I was applying for English, I wrote about interning as an Editor for a magazine, translating works between Mandarin and English, and participating in various essay prizes around my subject. So what I hoped this would demonstrate is my proficiency with the language, my comfort with academic research and writing at the higher level and my passion for exploring the subject beyond the bounds of what was taught in a classroom.
