This video is for all Oxford applicants who needÊ to take the MLAT or Modern Languages AdmissionsÊÊ Test. This is anyone applying for the following courses: Modern Languages, European and MiddleÊÊ Eastern Languages; Classics and ModernÊLanguages; English and Modern Languages;ÊHistory and Modern Languages; Modern Languages andÊLinguistics or Philosophy and Modern Languages. As the MLAT is now online you will take this using either a test centre computer or your own device.ÊÊPlease note Russian and Modern Greek tests areÊhybrid, which means you will see the questionsÊon the screen but write your answers into theÊanswer booklet supplied by your test centre.ÊFor all other languages, answers will be enteredÊonline. Here we will take you through an onlineÊpractice paper and advise the best way to prepare so that you can feel confident on test day.ÊÊ Our admissions tests aim to stretch the strongest applicants so don't worry if you find the testÊhard - it's supposed to be. The best way toÊprepare for the MLAT is to explore thoroughlyÊthe practice materials you will find on ourÊwebsite. We know that applicants who practiseÊtend to do better, so we strongly recommend thatÊyou familiarise yourself with the test content,Êstructure and format so you can do your bestÊon the day. When doing past papers, we recommendÊthat you practise typing your answers to helpÊfamiliarise yourself with the online test format.ÊÊ Now let's take a look at the MLAT practice online test for these languages.ÊÊ There are separate sections for eachÊof the following eight languages: Czech, French, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish.Ê The two other sections of the MLAT are theÊLanguage Aptitude Test or LAT - for those applyingÊfor new languages as beginners and for RussianÊon its own. And the Philosophy test (for thoseÊapplying for Philosophy and Modern Languages). TheÊtest landing page will give you the instructions you need. Please read these carefully as they include important information about your test,Êand tips on navigating the platform. Once you have started your test, you will be able to viewÊÊ these instructions again at any time via the 'i'Êbutton at the top of the right side of the screen.ÊIf you are taking more than one section ofÊthe MLAT (for example French and Spanish),ÊÊthese will appear in sequential orderÊand you must complete and submit yourÊwork in one section (for example French) beforeÊproceeding to the next one (for example Spanish).ÊNote you cannot swap between the sections during the test. Once you click on 'StartÊthe test' you will be presented withÊthe questions on the screen. You can use the 'back' and 'next' buttons to navigate between the parts and sub-sections.ÊAlways scroll down to the bottom of the screen to make sure you donÕt miss any questions or answers.ÊWhere applicable, you can display the virtualÊkeyboard by clicking on the keyboard icon in theÊType here box. Once displayed, you can select the letters with special characters (e.g. Ž) from the keyboard. For most of the answers, however, you can use your normal keyboard.ÊÊ Since a normal keyboard is not appropriateÊfor Russian and Greek languages, candidatesÊwill write their answers in the bookletÊprovided. When doing your own practice test,Êremember to explore using all the tools - the highlighter, annotating tool and the notepad. ToÊuse the highlighter, click on it so thatÊit turns yellow - it is now ready to use.ÊÊ You can remove highlighting by clicking on theÊ'bin' icon which automatically appears above.ÊÊYou can also add and save anÊannotation to highlighted text,ÊÊ and display and hide the annotations, asÊrequired. Using the accessiblity button,ÊÊ you can also enlarge the font size andÊselect coloured overlays or high contrast. The timer for your test is centred at the top. ThisÊwill go yellow when there are five minutes leftÊof your test. Once you are happy with yourÊanswers, you can submit your work by clickingÊon the 'Submit' button at the bottom of the screen.Ê The final screen will provide you with a summaryÊof the remaining time, which questions you haveÊanswered and ask you to confirm submission.ÊÊ Have a go yourself at the MLAT onlineÊpractice test at: ox.ac.uk/mlat It is important you tell us if youÊhave any technical difficulties using these tools or entering your answersÊwhen doing the online practice test.ÊÊ Get in touch at oxford.testcentresupport@tcs.com as soon as possible so we can help.
