The University of Oxford receives more media coverage than any other UK university, and as much as any worldwide. The News & Information Office protects and promotes the reputation of the University in the media; deals with media and public enquiries; and promotes public understanding of the University’s research by disseminating research findings.
The office deals with up to 200 media enquiries and around 40 public enquiries each week. It handles media coverage of institutional matters, policy and sensitive issues. It promotes research findings and other successes to the media via news releases, exclusives, visits and briefings.
The office also acts as a direct news source for the public by writing and managing the University’s news pages, which include the Oxford Science Blog and the Arts at Oxford blog. More than 300 stories are posted each year, flagged from the University homepage, and the site receives around 1.3m visitors every year. The site also acts as a news feed for the media and for individual online and print newsletters produced by component parts of the collegiate University. The office also runs the University official twitter feed, @UniofOxford.
The information arm of the office provides a general information service to the public and to members of the University. It helps to answer or redirect the huge number of enquiries and questions received daily by the University, and it briefs external providers of University information, from local tour guides to reference books to higher education guides. It provides much of the content for the About the University and Visitors and Friends sections of the University website, including the what’s on listing and twitter feed, @OxfordUniEvents.
The News & Information Office monitors the hundreds of daily media mentions of Oxford in the worldwide media and summarises them in a daily news alert to all college and division heads, and others on request. The office also provides core services such as media training and advice and an ISDN line for radio interviews.
More information about the News & Information Office is provided on our pages specifically aimed at members of the University.
