Although many progressive French artists in the 19th and 20th centuries turned their backs on academic teaching, several of the most prominent used the female nude for some of their most radical and experimental work. From the Romantics through the Impressionists to Picasso, this lecture will explore the ways in which artists responded to an ancient tradition.
