Bryan Stevenson is a public-interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned. He’s the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, an Alabama-based group that has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent prisoners on death row, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults. He is being awarded an honorary degree by the University of Oxford at Encaenia 2017.
Desmond Tutu: "Justice needs champions, and Bryan Stevenson is such a champion. His courage and commitment contributed to the abolition of the death penalty for juveniles, and he is working tirelessly to end life sentences for adults convicted of crimes committed in their youth."
Lecture followed by afternoon tea at St Anne’s College. All are welcome to attend.
