Magical mischief, sublime music and midsummer madness collide in Henry Purcell’s playful reworking of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
When forbidden lovers Hermia and Lysander elope to the woods, they stumble into a world of warring fairies and raging passions. The fairy queen Titania has deserted her jealous husband Oberon, and chaos ensues as he seeks revenge.
With bumbling Bottom and impish Puck, The Fairy Queen interweaves Shakespeare’s original play with Purcell’s breathtaking score. The result is an enchanting opera that soars from comic duet to heart-rending lament.
With an all-singing, all-dancing cast of students from the University of Oxford, this is Shakespeare’s best-loved comedy as you’ve never seen or heard it before.
