Rachmaninov described Medtner, six years his senior, as ‘the greatest living composer’ in his diary for 1915, so it is fitting to couple two of their respective major works for piano, Rachmaninov’s well-known Variations on a Theme of Corelli with Medtner’s evocatively romantic, grandly structured Sonata no. 1.
Clare Hammond is a pianist of remarkable virtuosity and musicianship.
