This session will discuss systemic racism in the geosciences, which are a predominantly White discipline with very little representation from racial minorities.
Data show that racial minorities comprise a disproportionately small percentage of faculty and leadership positions in top geoscience institutions. This reflects the often exclusionary culture of certain disciplines.
Progress towards diversity, equity, and inclusion can only come with a concerted shift in mindsets and a deeper understanding of the complexities of race and racism, combined with a willingness to take action to address those problems.
This session will provide insights on systemic racism, and will offer guidelines on taking concrete action steps to address systemic racism in the geosciences.
