We recommend that you check opening times and admission charges with the place you wish to visit. Groups should book in advance and all visitors to colleges must report to the Lodge on arrival.
The University is a working institution and our colleges, in particular, are places of residence, work and study. You are therefore asked not to enter staircases, college rooms and areas marked as private.

Visiting Permanent Private Halls
In addition to the Colleges, there are six Permanent Private Halls at the University of Oxford. Two of them welcome visitors.

On this day in 1979, Sir Israel Brodie died. He had studied for a BLitt at Balliol college, but work was disturbed by a period as a Jewish chaplain on the Western front in the Great War– a role he would rise to again in the Second World War. In 1948 he became Chief Rabbi of Britain, and was the first incumbent to retire from office, in 1965. Credit: ODNB
