Breakout sessions

The first event in the UAS Conference Series 2013/14, taking place on Tuesday 1 October 2013 at the Examination Schools, consists of five breakout sessions. With the exception of breakout session 3, you have a choice of attending a 60-minute or up to two 25-minute presentations in each breakout period.

Target Audience: All staff, including managers supporting staff development and individuals considering their mobility across the University
 

This workshop will highlight the transferability of skills to enable mobility across the University. The session will begin with putting CVs into context via the careers planning model. This will include a brief overview of self awareness and opportunity awareness before focusing on how to take action, in particular putting together competitive CVs. Participants are welcome to bring a copy of their CV to work on during the session.

Making (good) video for the web

Target Audience: Anyone who is interested in web video, who makes it or commissions it. Some knowledge of video is helpful but not essential.
 

Making web video is easy. Making good web video is more of a challenge. The Online Media team in Public Affairs will discuss how the University has used web video to boost engagement, reach larger audiences and save money at the same time, and explain how a focus on quality has been crucial to this success. With the use of live interactive demonstrations, they will show how you can get the most out of this exciting technology, and offer tips for what works well. Please note that this is a repeat of the session given at the 2012 UAS Conference.

Get to the (Share)Point: sharing information and managing your work for you

SharePoint is a web-based platform offered by IT Services that supports the sharing of information and collaboration between University and non-University users. This session provides an overview of SharePoint and its benefits, and includes demonstrations of example uses and a case study of how the Examinations & Assessments team vastly improved the process of getting Proctors’ approval of examiner and assessor nominations. This session also covers new enhancements to the Oxford Nexus service, such as the Oxford Committee template for managing all your departmental committees and the ability to produce PDF versions of standard Office documents.

A fun-filled interactive language-learning session. We will teach you how to meet and greet, order food and pay – all in just under an hour. Participants will talk to each other within minutes in the target language.

Who wants to be a WebLearn millionaire?

All you ever wanted to know about WebLearn, including what kind of functionality and tools WebLearn offers, for example surveys, meeting sign-up and email lists. This is an interactive workshop with a ‘clicker’ quiz and discussion of how you (or your colleagues) might use WebLearn in your job.

Research data management: documenting and discovering research data

This session will introduce the University's rationale and objectives for supporting research data management. It will consider in more detail, through a practical exercise, the DataFinder service being developed to provide a central catalogue of research data produced by Oxford researchers.

Developing an inclusive workspace

Target Audience: All staff, with a particular emphasis on those involved in recruiting and managing staff and the induction of new colleagues
 

This workshop will look at inclusion in the workplace, considering it in terms of both recruitment and induction. The first part of the workshop will look at unconscious bias and techniques for countering it. The second part of the workshop will explore some of the barriers that new members of staff may face and how we can help someone who feels an outsider feel more at home. Examples will include differences arising from cultural background and disability.

An overview of Oxford undergraduate admissions interviews, with a chance to try some interview questions for yourself, working in small groups.

An exploration of life and work in a college. Each tour will be led by a senior college officer, who will give a tour of their college, talk about their role and answer any questions you may have. 

Alumni engagement: a two-way street

This session will briefly describe the context for alumni relations at Oxford and then go on to present why and how the University can remain relevant to its alumni throughout their lives.

How we support students with mental health difficulties at the University

This session will provide an overview of the support for students with mental health difficulties at the University, together with a procedural guide to the Counselling Service and the Disability Advisory Service.

Find out more about new obligations on the disclosure of 'datasets' (ie raw data) under the Freedom of Information Act, which come into force on 1 September 2013. The session will focus on the code of practice and ICO guidance on these new provisions.

An overview of 123 infrastructure charges

The 123 infrastructure model apportions charges of the services out to Divisions on a formulaic basis.  The session will explore the current model that charges out the net costs of the services for 2013/14. 

Psychological challenges facing international students and how to support them
