BUCS VISA Outdoor Athletics Championships 2012

 Olympic stadium (London)

The Olympic stadium in London hosted this year's British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships, with 70 entries from Oxford hopefuls.

This was the first major event to take place at the stadium and, as well as putting students through their paces, it was an opportunity to test the facilities and familiarise athletes with the venue. Here's a report from our team:

What a fantastic weekend. I know that it appears that Oxford didn’t have much success, given the lack of medals, but compared to recent years and given the extremely high standard of competition it was a very good weekend for the Oxford team with countless personal bests.

  • 3rd place for Clara Blattler in the Women’s Pole Vault Final
  • 5th place for Jessica Chen in the Women’s 5000m, with a time that takes her to the top of the UK Under 20 rankings in 2012, and places her 24th on the UK Under 20 all-time list.
  • 5th place for the men’s 4x100m Relay team in the Final. Their time of 42.63 from the heat is 2nd fastest on the club all-time rankings.
  • 6th place for the men’s 4x400m relay team in the final. Their time of 3:16.74 would have placed them in the silver medal position last year, and we suspect it is an OUAC club record (records not complete).
  • 9th place for Tom Frith in the 1500m final (3:54.48) following a four-second personal best of 3:48.87 in the semi-final.
  • 10th place for Alex Probodziak in the Javelin, with a 55.08m throw in the final following a 57.37 personal best in the qualification round.
  • 11th place for Freddie Hendry in the High Jump with a jump of 1.85m, after equalling his personal best of 1.90m in the qualifiers.
  • 12th place for Fabe Downs in the men’s 5000m final.
  • Oxford alumnus and ex-OUCCC captain Ian Kimpton won the men’s 10,000m running for Nottingham.
  • Former OUAC secretary & vice-captain Carolyn Plateau finished 4th in the 800m running for Loughborough.
