Medical emergencies

Treatment in cases of emergency only can be obtained at the Emergency Department (A&E) of the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington (tel. 220208/9).

The exception is emergencies affecting the eye which are treated by the staff of the Oxford Eye Hospital in the new West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital (tel. 224800) either within their own Eye Emergency Department (Monday to Friday, 8.00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m.) or in the Eye Emergency room in A&E (all other times).

Hospital emergency services should be warned in advance if possible so that they know to expect you. Where someone cannot be moved, ring 999 and ask for the Ambulance Service.

If it is not an emergency, but you need urgent medical advice (or think you need to see a doctor urgently) out of working hours, you should ring your GP's surgery. You will be connected to the Out of Hours Service and a local GP will telephone you back, usually within half an hour. If you need to be seen, you will be advised to attend the Out of Hours Centre at Manzil Way (off Cowley Road).

Advice and health information is also available at any time from NHS Direct (tel. 0845 4647).

Bites and scratches from animals

You should contact the Occupational Health Service first (Oxford (2)82676, Monday to Friday, 9.00 a.m.–5.00 p.m.), telephoning them to let them know of the problem before you arrive, unless:

  • it is a major bite with a lot of tissue damage, in which case go straight to the Accident Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington. Inform the Medical Officer on duty at the Infectious Disease Unit, John Warin Ward, Churchill Hospital (tel. 225570);
  • it happens outside working hours: at night or weekends you should go to the Accident Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington, and as above, inform the Medical Officer on duty at the Infectious Disease Unit.
