Travel around Oxford

It is possible get around much of the city centre by walking or cycling, plus there are a range of bus services available.

Cycling

Cycling is a very popular way of getting around Oxford but unfortunately please be aware that bike theft occurs regularly. You can register your bike with the University Cycle registration scheme for only 60p. Doing so, will help the Police to get your bike back to you if it is stolen.

Bus

The two main bus companies in Oxford are Stagecoach and the Oxford bus company.

You can find the times of your next bus by using Mobile Oxford. Mobile Oxford provides information from across the University and City of Oxford to your mobile phone.

OUSU Night Bus

The Safety Bus scheme is run jointly by Oxford Brookes Students’ Union and OUSU. It was set up to provide a safe means of transport late at night. The Vice President (Women) and Vice President (Charities and Community) is responsible for the OUSU side of the partnership.

To use the service simply ring 07714 445050 between 9 p.m.–3 a.m. Monday to Saturdays and 9 p.m.–1 a.m. on Sundays. The bus will pick you up and deliver you to any destination within the ring road all for only £1 donation per trip.

Travel to and from Oxford

Rail

Railcards which give one third off ticket prices are available to 16-25 year olds or if you are over 26 and a full-time student.

Coach

A student discount is available on National Express coaches.

Buses to London

X90 Oxford - London

The X90 coach service runs an express route linking Oxford, Hillingdon and London.

A student discount is available with a valid student card.

Oxford tube  

The Oxford tube runs coaches up to every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day between Oxford and London.

A student discount is available with a valid student card.

Discounted travel in London

Oxford students can use the 16-25 Railcard (even if they're over 25, provided that they're still a full-time student) for discounts on London travel, including using the London Underground.

Transport for London also run the Oyster Card scheme for travel in London. However, students are only eligible for Oyster Card discounted travel if they are resident in London during term time. With the exception of some Oxford postgraduates who are well advanced into their degree, the University Statutes require that a University of Oxford student be resident in Oxford, and are therefore currently ineligible for the London Student Oyster Card.
