Tell us about your digital experience for the chance to win a Kindle

Don’t miss out on the chance to win a Kindle by sharing your views on IT in the DIGE Student Survey before Wednesday 29 February. The survey is part of Oxford’s Student Digital Experience (DIGE) project investigating students' use of digital technologies in their studies and social lives, in order to enhance both the learning experience and the supporting technologies provided by the University. The survey should take 10-15 minutes and all responses will be stored anonymously.

Scholarship opportunities and deadlines

Charterhouse European Bursaries: Awards of up to £4,000 for periods of study from 3 months to a year in European Union (EU), European Free Trade Association (EFTA), or Eastern or Central European countries (but excluding Russia). The closing date for applications is Friday 17 February.  

Scatcherd European Scholarships: Awards of up to £6,500 for periods of study from 3 months to a year in another European country (including Russia and all countries to the west of the Urals, but excluding Turkey). The closing date for applications is Friday 17 February.

Chinese Government Scholarships: The Chinese Government is offering 3 full scholarships to non-Chinese citizens to study a variety of disciplines at a choice of Chinese universities in 2012-13. The scholarships offer up to 7 years of funding, including up to 2 years of Chinese language tuition (if needed). Applications must be submitted to the Study Abroad Office, Examination Schools by Wednesday 7 March.

Global Summer Programmes and Internships

International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Global Internship Program: The IARU offers interns the chance to conduct high-impact research and lead projects in universities around the world. Applications are currently being accepted until Thursday 1 March for internship places at Yale University and the National University of Singapore. For more details visit the IARU website.

India Studies Expose' Summer Course: St. Xavier's College in Mumbai is offering a three week summer course from 25 July to 15 August 2012, giving undergraduates the chance to experience the culture, history and the prevailing social scenario in the Indian Subcontinent. The deadline for applications is Monday 20 February.

Aspen India Avantha International Fellowship 2012: This programme offers two international students the chance to visit the Aspen Institute in Haryana, India between 15 June and 20 August 2012 and learn about the social, political and economic issues facing the world’s largest democracy. Further details are available from the Avantha International Fellowship brochure (74kb), with the application deadline Wednesday 14 March.

ArtMill Bohemian Workshops: A three-week programme from 19 May to 9 June or 15 July to 4 August, exploring the diverse intersection of art and sustainability while gaining awareness of the culture of the Czech Republic. The programme begins in Prague with a cultural survey of the Czech capital, and continues at ArtMill Center for Sustainable Creativity, located in a rural farming community in Southern Bohemia. Looking for accommodation in Oxford?

The University’s Student Pad website allows you to easily search online for a range of University, College and private housing in Oxford, including rooms, flats, houses to share and flats and houses for couples or families. All accommodation featured has the relevant Landlord’s Gas Safety Certificates, Tenancy Deposit Scheme details and EPC (Energy Performance Certificates) where applicable.

Study about the self-beliefs of women who are on a diet

Are you female and between the ages of 18 and 35 years? Are you on a diet or perhaps just trying to eat a bit more healthily in 2012? Volunteers are needed for a short study that is hoping to learn more about the self-beliefs of women who meet this description. There are two parts: 1) a short online survey, and 2) a word task to be completed at the Isis Innovation Centre, which should not take longer than 30-40 minutes. All participants will be entered into a prize draw to win one of 8 Amazon vouchers worth £25. This study has received full ethical approval from the University of Oxford. Cultural awareness session for new Chinese students

2pm-5pm, Tuesday 21 February, Examination Schools

Designed for first year Chinese students, this interactive, cross-cultural session will help you discover ways to build your confidence, develop your skills and help you integrate better into University life. The session is provided by the Chopsticks Club. Email student.information@admin.ox.ac.uk to book a place or for more details.

Idea of a University Seminar: Size and shape matters

The latest Idea of a University seminar will include presentations on:

  • Learning and teaching in tutorials and classes - Helen Kaufmann (Classics)
  • Size matters in teaching modern languages - Helen Swift (Modern Languages)
  • Beyond critical thinking: developing the whole student through higher education - Kathleen Quinlan (Oxford Learning Institute)

Mock Exams and Q&A Drop-In Sessions

A final reminder for this term’s mock examinations, held in the Examination Schools on Tuesday 21 February and Thursday 23 February (Week 6) and each followed by an examination question and answer session. If you wish to attend, sign up via the Mock Examination WebLearn site. Two further mock exam sessions will be held in Trinity Term Week 4.

Lunchtime question and answer drop-in sessions will also be hosted in Hilary and Trinity Term for students with any exam or assessment queries. The sessions will be held from 12.15-1.45pm in the Examination Schools on Wednesday 22 February (Week 6) and Thursday 3 May (Trinity Term Week 2). There is no need to book for the Q&A sessions, simply come along with your queries and comments.

Jenner Institute Clinical Vaccine Trials

Would you like to help in the development of vaccines against major global diseases? If you are aged 18-50 and in good health, you could be eligible to take part in one of the Jenner Institute’s clinical trials. Get in touch for more information on what is involved and how to enrol by visiting the Jenner Institute website, emailing VaccineTrials@well.ox.ac.uk or calling 01865 857406.
