Responsible celebrations after exams – message from the Proctors

We should like to wish you very well, if you are taking exams this summer. We want you to enjoy coming out of your last exam, or meeting others from theirs, but we urge you to celebrate responsibly and to show consideration for others. Safety and public order are our core concerns.

Closed champagne bottles, flowers and balloons are all fine! But please, bring nothing which will create litter in the streets, and above all, NO FOOD ITEMS. The waste of food is particularly offensive in a city where there are many homeless and hungry people. In previous years members of the public have been injured by slipping on flour wet from champagne and eggs, and complaints have been made by shop-keepers whose businesses have been affected by mess left on their windows and doorways.

Rotting food, vomit, broken glass and other items causing litter are simply not what any of us wants to see. They are a disgrace and potentially dangerous. Please note the University’s rules. The Proctors will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against those who break them. Spot fines are normally £80, but higher penalties will be imposed for more serious breaches of the Regulations.

Please also be aware that several local pubs do not admit students covered in foodstuffs. And please remember that every pound the University has to spend on the cost of cleaning up means that there is one pound less for bursaries, scholarships, and hardship funds.

We need your help in ensuring that your celebrations are safe and responsible. We hope very much that you will lend us your full co-operation over the coming weeks. We wish you good luck in your exams and enjoyable celebrations when they are over.

Feedback on the redesign of the University website

A project is underway to refresh the design, structure and functionality of the University of Oxford website. You may have used many of the Admissions pages yourself when you were applying for study as a prospective student, and using the Student Gateway now that you are studying here at Oxford. Feedback is being sought on the proposed new design, which will be responsive to phone, tablet or desktop. To view and comment on the sample Homepage, Course page and News page, please complete the online survey which is open until 10 June.

Volunteers needed for Undergraduate Open Days

The University Open Days are taking place on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 June – would you like to help by giving directions, handing out the Open Day Guide and generally assisting potential applicants who have come to see what Oxford is all about? You won’t need any specialist undergraduate admission knowledge and we’ll provide you with a University T-shirt to wear on the day! We need people on both mornings for the train station and Water Eaton Park & Ride, and to help throughout the day in the city centre and in the Exams schools. If you are able to spare some time to get involved, whether it’s a couple of hours or the full day, please email Jan Marshall at opendays@admin.ox.ac.uk or phone (2)70745. We will also be looking for volunteers for Friday 20 September. Please let us know if this is of interest.
