Tsinghua University – scholarships to study in China

Tsinghua University are offering Oxford students full scholarships for postgraduate study. The scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, living allowance and medical insurance. For admission in 2013, please apply through Tsinghua’s website by Thursday 28 February 2013. If you have any queries about this scholarship, please contact grad@tsinghua.edu.cn.

GSS Student Reporting 12 November – 23 November

Student reporting for Michaelmas Term will be open in the Graduate Supervision System (GSS) between Monday 12 November - Friday 23 November, offering the chance to contribute to your termly supervision reports by reviewing and commenting on your academic progress. Please also check that your Supervisor, DGS and College Advisor are correct and contact your College Administrator (for College Advisor amendments) or the relevant Graduate Studies Assistant with any changes. Supervisor reporting will open from Monday 26 November and you will be notified by email when your report is ready to view.

Microsoft Office 2010 (and 2011 for Mac) for Students

IT Services and Microsoft have agreed a trial partnership, offering the latest Microsoft Office software to students for less than £50. The offer is available from the 6 November to 5 December 2012 and includes the current Office software (2010 for Windows, 2011 for Mac) plus free upgrades to any new versions released in the next three years so long as you are still a student. When you finish being a student you may keep the copy you have forever, but will have no more upgrade rights. Take the Bodleian Libraries 2012 Reader Survey & Win!

The Bodleian Libraries are seeking your assistance in assessing the quality of the library services by filling out a web-based survey, before 16 November. If you have already completed the survey, thank you! If you haven’t yet - please respond by giving your assessment of Bodleian Libraries services based on the library that you use most frequently. A comments box is available if you have feedback on other Bodleian sites or on the Bodleian Libraries generally. Please complete the survey even if you rarely visit one of the libraries - the survey also covers feedback on the extensive range of online services such as electronic journal collections. Don’t forget to key in your e-mail address at the end of the survey if you want to enter the draw for an opportunity to win an iPad or one of five £30 Amazon vouchers.

Internship opportunity: Press & Information Office

The Press and Information Office of Oxford University is seeking a paid intern to help support the work of the press officer covering research stories in health and medicine. The role is available in the first quarter of 2013, and is a good opportunity for those interested in careers in science writing and journalism; science communication and engagement and media relations. The rate of pay is £10.23 an hour, for a total time of 190 hours (to be spread over five to ten weeks depending on weekly hours worked). UK Banks and Small Businesses: Key to Economic Recovery

Ana Botin, the CEO of Santander UK will be giving a lecture and Q&A session on UK Banks and Small Businesses on Thursday 15 November 2012 at 1.30pm (seats should be taken by 1.20pm). The lecture is being held at Ship Street Centre, located opposite Jesus College on Ship Street. Places must be booked by emailing Ms Joely Gibbens (Events Office) at invitation@admin.ox.ac.uk.

A talk will be held by Student Immigration regarding the visa requirements to work in the UK after your studies. Please visit the Careers Service webpage for further details.

Workshops for your research and learning

Bodleian Libraries will be running the following workshops at IT Services, 13 Banbury Road. Places must be booked via the Bodleian Libraries website.

WISER: Searching online news sources (Fri 16 Nov 10.15 – 12.15) (wk 6) - News sources are primary resources for researching contemporary political and social issues. This session will provide an overview of the key resources and hands-on exercises with databases such as Nexis UK, Factiva, and Proquest.

WISER: Social science data services (Tues 20 Nov 2.00 – 4.00) (wk 7) - Social science data services provide archives of data for use by researchers and students. The session will provide an overview of the available services and exercises with the Economic and Social Data Service and ICPSR.

ARTstor and Bridgeman: using images in teaching and learning (Tuesday 20 Nov 2.00-4.00) (wk 7) - The course examines two major digital image collections subscribed to by the University - ARTstor and Bridgeman Education - geared to research and teaching in the humanities, history of science and medicine, and social sciences. Viewing, presenting and managing images are also covered.

WISER: Tech Tools - Reference Management (Wed 21 Nov 2.00 – 5.00) (wk 7) - Keeping track of your references and formatting them correctly for your thesis or publication is a chore. Reference management software makes it easy and is worth investigating. This introductory session gives an overview of how it works and the pros and cons of RefWorks, EndNote, Zotero and Mendeley.

Research Skills Toolkit (26 - 30 Nov) (wk 8) – An introduction to 10 key IT and information tools and skills for research students in a hands on workshop, including: reference management, keeping up to date, finding articles and papers, Excel pivot tables, finding and managing images, podcasting, Word for your thesis and measuring research impact.
