IT Resources

Every Oxford student has their own webspace, access to discounted software and more. Find out how you can benefit from each of these resources below.

Personal web space

Every student at the University has access to 15 MB of personal web space. This free space can be used to house a website or as an online storage area.

To find out how to activate your web space visit the IT Services webpage.

Oxfile

OxFile is a web service that supports the exchange of large files (up to 25GB) with people inside and outside of Oxford University.

It is simple and fast to use, and any member of the University can set up a file exchange for immediate use.

Please be aware:

  • this system is self-tidying with files automatically pruned after a (user-selected) fixed period
  • you can choose to automatically send a notification email when files have been uploaded/downloaded
  • basic security (encrypted file transfer, server verification, and user access control) is included by default.

Data backup and archiving (graduates only)

The central Hierarchical File Server (HFS) provides scheduled weekly and on-demand backups of your files to safeguard against computer loss or damage.

The service also offers an archiving facility for data of long-term value to the University.

Free and low cost software

The IT Services Online Shop offers students the opportunity to purchase software at a reduced cost.

This offer includes special rates on Microsoft products via 'Student and Home' packs available from High Street retailers, or at further reduced rates via Official Microsoft Education Partners.

Free Software available includes:

  • Open Office - a Microsoft Office replacement
  • Firefox - a fully featured and secure web browser
  • Thunderbird - a fully featured and secure email client
  • Sophos anti-virus software is free to members of the University

All the above programs are available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux systems.
