During your studies

The Student Information and Advisory Service can help you while you are studying by providing information about your visa conditions and important legal obligations, help with extending your visa, advice about travelling outside the UK during your stay, and the rules about working while you have a student visa.

Important: your legal obligations as a Tier 4 visa holder

Failure to abide by the conditions of your Tier 4 student visa can have serious consequences such as disrupting your studies or unintentionally leading you to commit an illegal offence. It also has wider implications for the University’s licence to sponsor international students and the ability to continue to hold a Highly trusted status so please do cooperate with us fully in respect of all these legal requirements. This includes notifying us of any changes in your circumstances and telling us immediately if you change to another type of visa.

The University is required  to inform the UK Border Agency (UKBA) about any Tier 4 student who fails to arrive for the start of a course, withdraws from a course, transfers course, defers or suspends their studies,  completes their studies earlier than expected, or is unexpectedly absent for a significant period of time. In addition, we must report all visa refusals overseas or within the UK to the UKBA.

Changes in circumstances and what to do

Please be aware that any changes to your student status may have an impact on your Tier 4 Student visa. Please download Changes in Student status and your Tier 4 student visa (60kb) on how changes such as suspension, deferral, withdrawal, course transfer, etc. could affect your visa status. If you stop studying, this will affect your working entitlement and you should seek advice and notify your employer of a change of circumstances immediately. This may also affect your dependants’ permission to stay in the country and/or work and you must seek advice.
