8. Keble
A doorway in Liddon Quad of Keble College. Liddon Quad is named after Henry Parry Liddon, who was partly responsible for the choice of William Butterfield as the architect of the College. One of the most striking features of the quad is the large sunken area in the middle. Until recently it was thought that this was a deliberate feature designed by Butterfield, but research has revealed that the land was formerly a quarry and Butterfield had to buy in earth to build up the terraces and form the quad, which cost up to a shilling a load.
