6. Bodleian

One of the many doorways to the former ‘Schools’ in the Old Schools Quadrangle of the Bodleian Library. The Schools Quadrangle was built in the early seventeenth century to house lecture and examination rooms, and the gold inscriptions above the doorways show the different faculties that were accommodated there. Thomas Bodley was the prime mover in this ambitious building project, although work did not start until after his death in 1613. The quadrangle was structurally complete by 1619, but work on fitting it out continued until at least 1624.
