22. All Souls

The present gates of All Souls College date from the eighteenth century, possibly during the time of George Clark and Nicholas Hawksmoor. However, a reference to the college gates can be found as far back as 1633: “This yeare our Colledge gats were repaired, and lined face-way towards the streete, and lykwise newly adorned with the Armes of his Majestie, of our Prince, and of our founder; And allsoe the three statues over our gates of our Saviour, of Kinge Henry the sixt, and our founder, were at the same tyme polished, smothed, and renewed, with vernishe, and guilt, as formerly they had beene.” (H.M. Colvin and J. Simmons, All Souls: an Oxford college and its buildings, Oxford, 1989, p. 81).
