A slice of Pi
05 Apr 13
March 14th at 1.59pm (ie 3.14159) saw the launch of 'Pi Day Live', an online event hosted by Professor Marcus du Sautoy.
The free event saw 2,500 participants learn about Pi and how to calculate it without using a computer. The results were then uploaded as part of a crowd-sourcing experiment.
The event was organised by the Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning (TALL) team in the Department for Continuing Education and was designed as an interactive way to engage people with ideas and research at Oxford. You can read more about the event on the TALL blog.
David White in the TALL team is keen to talk to departments who may want to run a similar style of online event in the future and who are interested in exploring funding opportunities to do so. These kind of events could be associated with a wide range of disciplines where it would be useful to engage a large number of people in a particular theme.
