400 years of Bodleian’s history online

The first online catalogue of the Bodleian’s own organisational archive, titled Library Records, was published at the end of last year and is available to view here.

The archive, providing a unique and valuable resource of the administration and daily concerns of the Library over a period of four hundred years, contains over 5,000 items of material.

The records include papers concerning Library finances, the construction and repair of buildings, the acquisition and cataloguing of collections, correspondence with donors, depositors and enquirers and records of readers’ admission and book orders. These papers are of historical significance and are preserved for the benefit of researchers.

Treasures from the collection include the Library’s earliest known reader’s card which dates from 1613/14 and an admission register signed by both Iris Murdoch and Philip Larkin in 1940.
