Celebrations of national language and lives

In the largest language research project in the world, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) lexicographers are undertaking the first complete revision of the dictionary since the first volumes were published between 1884 and 1928.
Since the launch of OED Online in 2000, OED has issued quarterly updates of between 1,000 and 2,000 revised entries, while simultaneously scanning contemporary written and electronic text for new usages to add throughout the dictionary.
OUP’s other flagship work of reference, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, appeared in a completely revised edition and online in 2004: like the OED it continues to grow, with new lives added in regular updates. In 2007 the University was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for the project, which was led by researchers from the History Faculty.
