Alan Bowman.jpgAlan Bowman read Literae Humaniores at Queen’s College, Oxford before going on to the University of Toronto to study for his his MA and PhD. Following this he has been: Assistant Professor of Classics at Rutgers University, New Jersey Lecturer in Ancient History, University of Manchester Official Student and Tutor in Ancient History at Christ Church, and Camden Professor of Ancient History and Fellow of Brasenose College.

Other academic positions and honours include: Fellow of the British Academy, President of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, and he has been Director of the Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents at Oxford since 1994.Current research projects include:

  • Ongoing work on the Vindolanda Writing-tablets and on Romano-British writing-tablets in general.
  • A five-year (2005-10) project on the Economy of the Roman Empire, in collaboration with Prof. Andrew Wilson (All Souls College), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
  • “A Virtual Workspace for the Study of Ancient Documents” A 2-year pilot project funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (2007-9) as part of a wider Oxford programme called “Building a Virtual Research Environment for the Humanities”.
  • E-Science, Technology and Documents. A 3-year project funded by the AHRC (2008-11), in collaboration with Professor Sir Michael Brady (Oxford) and Dr Melissa Terras (University College London).
