Research Assessment Exercises have been held in the UK in 1986, 1989, 1992, 1996, 2001 and 2008.
The RAE is conducted jointly by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DEL).

Sir Isaac Wolfson, who was born on this day in 1897, was a businessman and philanthropist, whose foundation established the postgraduate Wolfson College, Oxford, in 1966. Wolfson joined a mail-order company, Universal Stores, in 1926, and transformed the fortunes of the company, diversifying from family mail-order trade, turning it into the largest mail-order company outside the USA after World War Two, and the fifth wealthiest retail company in Britain at the time of his death.
