Professor Goodman studies the political, social and religious history of the Jews in the Roman Empire, in particular the relationship of the Jews to the wider Roman world in which they lived. He is the author of a number of books on the Jewish revolts against Rome and the rabbis in the Roman world.
He has been President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, a Recognised Independent Centre of the University of Oxford, since 2014.
