New series asks whether it is better to remember or forget

18 October 2017

The first event in a new seminar series about post-war commemoration takes place on Friday evening (20 October), at 5.30pm in the Mathematical Institute on the Woodstock Road.

In a free, public event, the Sierra Leone-British novelist and journalist Aminatta Forna will discuss her search for the truth about the death of her father, and explore questions about commemoration.

All are welcome and free tickets are available here. The series runs until next June, and the full programme of events can be found here.

Questions to be explored in the Series include:

  • What roles do cultural practices of commemoration play in the work of post-war reconstruction and reconciliation?
  • How does commemoration differ across cultures?
  • How can we do commemoration better?
  • How can commemoration help to reintegrate military veterans into civilian society?
