Hearing tuned to individual
Pete Wilton | 14 Jan 08

Everyone hears things differently according to scientists from Oxford's Auditory Neuroscience Group. Their latest research, reported in BBSRC Business, reveals that our brains adapt to the sound around us, creating soundscapes that are unique to the individual. Jan Schnupp, who led the research, said: 'Each person's auditory cortex in their brain is adpated to the way their ears deliver sound to them... If you could borrow someone else's ears you would have real difficulty in locating the source of sounds, at least until your brain had relearned how to do it.' The research could help in the development of better hearing aids and speech recognition systems.
