At a ceremony at Rhodes House this evening 70 Oxford University professors, lecturers, and staff will receive awards in recognition of their excellent teaching.

The Oxford University Teaching Awards recognise all kinds of work to engage students and help them learn: from creating new courses, to innovative use of audio and video podcasts, and the ability to deliver brilliant lectures and demonstrations.

The scheme, which is coordinated by the Oxford Learning Institute, recognises excellence in college and university teaching, the winners being selected by their divisions or faculties.

The award certificates will be presented by Professor Andrew Hamilton, the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford. As well as the certificates 14 of the awards will be in the form of grants to support educational projects chosen by divisions or departments that are aimed at improving teaching.

Many of the awards have been made following feedback from undergraduates, graduates and members of staff who have singled out the special contribution of those involved in promoting the highest standards of teaching and learning.

Among the 70 people to receive awards are Dr Laura Swift, Dr Jackie Stedall, Professor Anton der Merwe, and Dr Jason Hart:

Dr Laura Swift of the Faculty of Classics and Trinity College has been recognised for her conscientious and thoughtful work as a college tutor and her outreach work with the Faculty.

Dr Jackie Stedall of the Institute of Mathematics and The Queen’s College received her award for the development of the History of Mathematics course and was also given a joint project award with Dr Catherine Wilkins.

Professor Anton der Merwe of the Sir William Dunne School of Pathology and Brasenose College was recognised for his efforts in embedding graduate studies within the School.

Dr Jason Hart of the Department of International Development received his award for outstanding teaching ability with one student commenting: ‘by the end of two hours I feel like I’ve learned so much, it’s almost like he tricks you into learning!’

The Teaching Awards scheme was launched by the Oxford University Learning Institute in 2006.
