Oxford top of RAE funding

The University of Oxford has received the highest amount of quality research funding of any university from the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
The quality ratings for research came out in December 2008, and Oxford was judged to have the largest submission of world-leading research (4* rated) in the UK. Oxford also had the largest submission of world-leading or internationally excellent research (4* or 3* rated) in the UK.
The results have now been reflected in the distribution of funds by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), with Oxford receiving £118.9m for 2009-10, higher than any other university.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Dr John Hood, said: ‘This is testament to the brilliance and commitment of our academics, and reflects both the breadth and depth of Oxford’s research activity. We very much welcome this funding.’
He sounded a note of caution, however. ‘The increase in this funding on last year does not keep pace with the increase in our activity or our costs. Meanwhile, we - like every institution globally - are living through difficult economic times. We will not cease to maximise value for money, nor will we stop urging our friends and alumni to support our world-leading research and teaching. That is more crucial in the current economic climate than ever.’
