Debating the future of capitalism

Professor Jonathan Michie
The debate - 'The current financial crisis sounds the death knell for laissez-faire capitalism' - is being proposed by Professor Jonathan Michie.

The current financial crisis is foremost in people's minds at the moment but what happens next? What future is there for the current economic system?

Oxford academics are debating this very question in this term's Oxford Online Debate and you can vote on what they say.

The debate - 'The current financial crisis sounds the death knell for laissez-faire capitalism' - is being proposed by Professor Jonathan Michie, Director of the Department for Continuing Education and President of Kellogg College, and opposed by Dr Linda Yueh, Fellow in Economics at St Edmund Hall.

Launched today, the debate will feature four contributions from each academic. The public can comment online and vote from 24 November.

The debate is being moderated by Professor Colin Mayer, Dean of the Said Business School.

Each term, Oxford Online Debates will see two leading University academics debating a topical issue.

Last term's debate proposed that 'The nuclear option is the only green option' and proved very popular with the public.
