New programme to attract the UK's brightest ethnic minority students

The University of Oxford has launched 'Pioneering Ambitions', a new programme to attract talented ethnic minority students to the University.
Following a wide-ranging consultation with ethnic minority students, teachers, media and politicians, this programme has been created to build upon existing University outreach work with ethnic minority communities.
The programme will include Oxford alumni and other professionals mentoring talented young people, and a series of events called 'Trading Places', where alumni and celebrities visit schools to talk about higher education and careers.
Trading Places events have already taken place at schools in Manchester and Berkshire. Pupils at Stretford Grammar School in Manchester were inspired by British Moroccan actor Nabil Elouahabi, best known for his role as Tariq Larousi in EastEnders. He said: 'It’s great to be part of an educational initiative that aims to engage and encourage young students in a fun and interactive way.’
Teresa Thorp, Head of Sixth Form at Stretford Grammar, added: ‘Our schools’ participation in this project is invaluable, and a positive opportunity for our bright and talented students to shine. Through having the opportunity to work with successful Oxford alumni, Trading Places can help to raise our students’ ambitions and confidence to strive for higher education within the UK’s best universities.’
The next event will held in Birmingham at King Edward VI Five Ways School.
