Oxford team triumphs in ‘University Challenge’
04 Mar 08
A team of students from Oxford University has won the final of this year’s University Challenge quiz programme.
The team from Christ Church beat Sheffield University in the final, which was broadcast on BBC 2 last night. They won the quiz show by 220 points to 170.
It is the 14th time that an Oxford college has lifted the trophy since the programme began in 1963, with only six wins for Cambridge.
Since the programme’s return in 1994 with Jeremy Paxman presenting, Christ Church have made five appearances on the show (the first in 1998). Finally, their enthusiasm and determination have paid off.
Special guest Joan Bakewell presented the University Challenge 2008 trophy to Christ Church, captained by Max Kaufman. The other team members were Alexander Bubb, Susannah Darby and Charles Markland, who was formerly at Christ Church but is now a student of Balliol College.
In order to get to the final they beat teams from Cambridge, Nottingham, Warwick, and Manchester universities before their closely fought contest with Sheffield.
