Oxford application figures 2007: University Statement

Oxford received 13,383 applications in total for entry 2008 (or deferred entry 2009); 6,196 students applied from the state sector, and 4,551 from the independent sector. 

Applications received for entry 2008 show an increase for subjects that have been on the decline nationally. First indications show substantial increases in Engineering, Modern Languages, and Computing Science.

Overall, application numbers to Oxford were slightly down on last year but over a two-year period, applications are still up by six per cent.

The state-independent school split has remained the same, with 58 per cent of UK applications coming from the state sector.


Notes to editors

  • In the last eight years, state sector applications to Oxford have gone up by 52 per cent (from 4,177 applicants for 1999 entry to 6,339 applicants for 2007 entry). Independent school applications went up by 18.3 per cent in the same period.
  • Overall applications to Oxford have risen by over 160 per cent over the last 35 years and by 43 per cent in the last 10 years.
  • The University of Oxford will publish detailed figures once the admissions cycle is complete.
