Professor Herman Waldmann, Head of the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, has been selected to receive the 2008 Thomas E Starzl Prize in surgery and immunology, in recognition of his work in the field of organ transplantation.
The Starzl prize was established in 1996 and is named after the first surgeon to transplant kidneys in humans with consistent success, and perform liver transplantation. It has been awarded to 13 international leaders in organ transplantation and immunology.
Professor Waldmann will be invited to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in April 2008 to formally receive the prize and to present the Thomas E Starzl Prize in Surgery and Immunology lecture. Dr Starzl joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1981 to direct the Pittsburgh Transplantation Institute, which was renamed in 1996 the Thomas E Starzl Transplantation Institute.
Professor Waldmann has been Head of the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology since 1994. He is also Head of the Therapeutic Immunology Group, undertaking research into the mechanisms of immune tolerance and how these can be harnessed. He is a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford.
