New guidance for medicine students

A book about careers in medicine edited by Dr Rameen Shakur, clinical teacher in Medicine for Green College and Worcester College, is set to help medicine students take the first steps in their career.
A Career in Medicine: do you have what it takes? is aimed at school and college students thinking of applying for a medicine degree, university students studying medicine, and new junior doctors. It was launched on Friday at the Royal Society of Medicine and is published by RSM (Royal Society of Medicine) Press.
Dr Shakur, an Oxford trainee cardiologist and the youngest teacher for the Green College clinical teaching programme, said: 'The book is the most current book on the entire process of joining and later succeeding in the differing specialities of the medical profession. With the introduction of a new career structure for all doctors post graduation, the book also provides information and insight into career progression for junior doctors.
'I hope the book will dispel some myths about the medical profession and provide a pragmatic insight into a career in medicine.'
A Career in Medicine also provides an online resource where students and junior doctors can seek advice directly from the expert contributors in the book.
