Changes in Regulations

The General Purposes Committee of Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 21 February.

Weldon Memorial Prize

Explanatory Note

These changes: (i) replace the reference to the Linacre Professor of Zoology with reference to any Established Chair within Zoology; (ii) reflect the updated arrangements for responsibility for appointments formerly made by faculty boards, in this case the Boards of the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences; and (iii) reflect the change in responsibility for appointments from Hebdomadal Council to the Medical Sciences Divisional Board.

Text of Regulations

1 In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002, concerning trusts, in regulation §372, relating to the Weldon Memorial Prize, amend regulation 3 as follows (new text underlined, deleted text scored through):

'3. The electors to the prize shall be

(1) the Vice-Chancellor;

(2) the Linacre Professor of Zoology holder of an Established Chair in the Department of Zoology on a rotational basis;

(3) one person appointed by the Board of the Faculty of Biological Sciences;

(4) one person appointed by the Board of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences;

(3)–(4) two persons appointed by the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Divisional Board;

(5)–(6) two persons appointed by Council the Medical Sciences Divisional Board.

Appointees shall hold office for six years and shall be re-eligible.'

2 Ibid, amend regulation 6 as follows (new text underlined, deleted text scored through):

'6. The prize shall, subject to the provisions of clause regulation 5 above, be awarded without regard to nationality or membership of any University to the person who, in the judgement of the electors, has, in the ten years next preceding the date of the award, published the most noteworthy contribution to the development of mathematical or statistical methods applied to problems in Biology. Biology shall, for the purposes of this clause, be interpreted as including Zoology, Botany, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, and Medical Science.'

3 Ibid, amend regulation 10 as follows (new text underlined, deleted text scored through):

'10. The electors shall have power to make regulations or by-laws rules for the purpose of carrying this decree these regulations into effect; and Council shall have power to alter the decree regulations from time to time in such manner as it shall deem expedient, provided that the main objects of the foundation as expressed in clauses regulations 1 and 6 above are always kept in view.'
