Proposals for Honorary Degrees to be conferred at the Encaenia in 2015, and for Degrees by Diploma

Members of Congregation are encouraged to suggest the names of people on whom such degrees might be conferred. Encaenia honorary degrees are conferred at the University's annual ceremonial event and degrees by diploma are conferred on heads of state and royalty. When considering possible honorands, the Honorary Degrees Committee will focus on individuals in the following categories:

1 those of high academic distinction in the fields of research and scholarship of specific interest to the University of Oxford
2 those distinguished in the visual, literary, musical and performing arts
3 those distinguished in business and industry
4 those who have played a distinguished role in public life, for example in contributing to progress and change in society
5 those who have made a significant contribution to the activities of the University of Oxford – such individuals would normally also fall into one of the categories above.

Within those categories, the Honorary Degrees Committee will aim to produce a balanced list, which takes account of the global dimension that characterises this University's activities. The Honorary Degrees Committee therefore encourages the nomination of individuals of conspicuous distinction with particular reference to diversity.

Honorary degrees will not be conferred on anyone who holds, or who has retired from, a resident teaching, research or administrative post within the University or in any college or other society, except in exceptional circumstances such as distinguished service outside the terms of his or her paid service.

Nominations should be sent on the approved application form, which is available from the Secretary to the Honorary Degrees Committee (tel: (2)80199, email: felicity.burchett@admin.ox.ac.uk) or can be downloaded by staff logging into the University of Oxford Single Sign-On system (www1.admin.ox.ac.uk/councilsec/governance/committees/hondegs). The completed form should be sent to the Secretary to the Honorary Degrees Committee, University Offices, Wellington Square, or by email to felicity.burchett@admin.ox.ac.uk by 9 May, under 'Strictly Confidential' cover.

While informal soundings within the University will often be desirable, every effort should be made to ensure that publicity is not at any stage given to any specific proposal for the conferral of an honorary degree. All nominations will be considered in strict confidence by the Honorary Degrees Committee, which submits its report to Council at the beginning of Michaelmas term. After discussion, Council will report back to the Honorary Degrees Committee, which will arrive at a list of honorands to put to Congregation.

The names of people on whom degrees by diploma and honorary degrees have recently been conferred may be found in the University Calendar, 2013–14, pp535–9.

This year's honorands are:

Sir Harrison Birtwistle
Professor Wallace Broecker
The Most Revd Dr Katharine Jefferts Schori
Sir Anish Kapoor
Professor Jean-Marie Lehn
Mr Robert Silvers.

General Notices

Gazette publication arrangements

This is the final full Gazette of Hilary term. A further issue will be published on 27 March, but this will be limited to Council and Congregation business and changes to Examination Regulations. Publication for Trinity term will begin on 24 April.

The deadline for receipt of items for publication in the Gazette of 24 April, which includes the Trinity term lecture supplement, will be brought forward because of the Easter office closure: the deadline for receipt of such items is noon on 9 April.

University Committees: Vacancies for appointment by Council and/or its General Purposes Committee

Council's General Purposes Committee (GPC) invites members of the University (subject to eligibility) to submit expressions of interest in relation to the following vacancies to which it or Council appoints.

Expressions of interest must be received by the Council Secretariat (shirley.mulvihill@admin.ox.ac.uk, tel: (2)80463) by 4pm on 31 March.

Any eligible person who wishes to have his or her name put forward for consideration is encouraged to speak with his or her head of division or head of house, and/or with the relevant committee members or officers to obtain more information about the role, prior to submitting an expression of interest. Expressions received from individuals will be collated by the Council Secretariat with those names received through other routes (such as via heads of division, heads of house or committee officers directly). All names will then be reviewed by the Registrar and Vice-Chancellor prior to being forwarded to GPC and/or Council for consideration as the appointing bodies for these committees.

The purpose of this invitation is to broaden the pool of potential candidates brought to the attention of the appointing body. The names put to the appointing body are only suggestions. It should be noted that the appointing body remains free to take its own decision, irrespective of any names received through this route. In particular, to support the commitments made by the University under its equality scheme, the appointing body will take into consideration the overall balance of membership on the body concerned, with reference to the appropriate representation of ethnicity, disability, age and gender.

University website refresh

The project to refresh the design and structure of the top-level pages of the University website is nearing completion, with the first sites due to launch at the start of Trinity term.

The top-level pages of the University site, known as oxweb, act as the public face of the University, and provide information to a range of audiences from prospective students to visitors. Oxweb also includes two sites with an internal focus: the Staff Gateway and the Student Gateway.

The redesigned homepage, together with Research, News & Events, Undergraduate Admissions and the Student Gateway, will go live on 23 April. The refreshed Staff Gateway will launch on 11 August, with Graduate Admissions and the International Office following in September.

Members of the University will be invited to preview and provide feedback on a beta version of the new site in early April.

Further information about the project is available on the oxweb project blog (accessible via single sign-on) at http://sharepoint.nexus.ox.ac.uk/sites/eap/pad/oxweb.
