Changes in Regulations

Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 23 November.

Professor of Poetry

Explanatory Note

Council has agreed a number of changes to the terms and conditions of the Professorship of Poetry, including the introduction of a college association for the post, revisions to the duties of the post-holder, and changes to the terms under which the post-holder is elected and the length of office. The revisions to the regulations proposed below enact those various changes.

Text of Regulations

1 In regulation 6 of Council Regulations 8 of 2002, delete existing paragraph (1) and substitute (new text underlined, deleted text struck through):

'(1) No candidate shall have votes reckoned to him or her at any election unless the candidate has been nominated in writing, not later than 4 pm on the forty-second day before that fixed for the election, by not fewer than twelve fifty members of Convocation.'

2 In Section III of Council Regulations 24 of 2002, concerning academic and other posts, delete existing § 274 and substitute as follows (new text underlined, deleted text struck through):

'§ 274. Professor of Poetry on the Foundation of Henry Birkhead

1. The post of Professor of Poetry shall be associated with All Souls College.

2. The Professor of Poetry shall deliver an inaugural lecture.

13. The Professor of Poetry shall deliver a Public Lecture in each term.

4. In addition to a Public Lecture, the Professor of Poetry will normally be required to offer one more termly event.

25. The Professor shall be elected by Convocation and shall hold office for five four years from the first day of the term following the term in which he or she was elected, and shall not be re-eligible.

6. The single criterion for eligibility shall be that candidates be of sufficient distinction to be able to fulfil the duties of the post.

37. The provisions of Sect I, § 4, cl 3, shall not apply to the Professorship of Poetry.'

Changes in Regulations

The Planning and Resource Allocation Committee of Council (PRAC) has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 23 November.  

Establishment of Professorship of Electrical Engineering

Explanatory Note

These changes establish the Professorship of Electrical Engineering. These regulations were approved by the division and by PRAC in 2009, but by oversight failed to be promulgated at that time.

Text of Regulations

1 In SCHEDULE A of Council Regulations 3 of 2004, concerning statutory professorships, after 'Professor of Control Engineering' insert:

'Professor of Electrical Engineering'.

2 In Sect III of Council Regulations 24 of 2002, concerning individual professorships, insert new § 78 as follows and renumber existing §§78–327 as §§79–328:

'§ 78 Professor of Electrical Engineering

1. There shall be a Professor of Electrical Engineering, who shall undertake research in and shall lecture and give instruction in that subject and generally promote its study in the University.  

2. The professor shall be elected by an electoral board consisting of:

(1) the Vice-Chancellor, or, if the head of the college specified in (2) of this clause is Vice-Chancellor, a person appointed by Council;

(2) the head of the college to which the professorship shall be for the time being allocated by Council under any decree in that behalf, or if the head is unable or unwilling to act, a person appointed by the governing body of the college;

(3) a person appointed by the governing body of the college specified in (2) of this clause;

(4)–(5) two persons appointed by Council;

(6)–(9) four persons appointed by the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board.

4. The professor shall be subject to the General Provisions of the decree concerning the duties of professors and to those Particular Provisions of the same decree which are applicable to this chair.'
