CONSULTATIVE NOTICEMathematical, Physical, and Life Sciences Board/Education Committee Review of the Mathematical InstituteThe Mathematical, Physical, and Life Sciences Board is undertaking a review of the Mathematical Institute jointly with the Education Committee, as part of Council's programme of rolling reviews of departments. The review will be chaired by the Head of Division, Professor Alex Halliday, and will take place on 1 March and 2 March 2010. The Review Committee would welcome written comments on matters falling within its terms of reference, given below. These should be sent to the MPLS Divisional Secretary and joint secretary to the Review Committee, Ms Mary Ann Robertson (e-mail: maryann.robertson@mpls.ox.ac.uk), by Monday, 18 January. The Review Committee's membership is: Professor Alex Halliday, FRS, Head of the MPLS Division (Chairman); Professor Ken Brown, Professor of Mathematics, University of Glasgow; Professor David Abrahams, Beyer Professor of Applied Mathematics, University of Manchester; Professor Gilbert Strang, Professor of Mathematics, MIT; Professor John Roe, Professor of Mathematics, Penn State; Professor Wendelin Werner, Professor of Mathematics, Université Paris-Sud XI; Professor Dame Kay Davies, Dr Lee's Professor of Anatomy and Head of the Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics; Dr Brian Stewart, Mathematical Institute; Dr Patrick Baird, Department of Physics. The terms of reference of the review are: 1. To review the quality of academic activities in the department, by reference to:
In particular: (a) the quality of the research of the department, including its participation in interdepartmental, interdivisional, and interdisciplinary activities, its research profile and strategy, and future challenges and opportunities; (b) the quality of undergraduate and graduate programmes, and their delivery and related issues, including:
(c) the organisation of the department, its management structures, and the relationship between the department and the Mathematical, Physical, and Life Sciences Division, including such matters as:
(d) the relationship (structural and operational) between units within the department, and between the department and cognate subject areas, and colleges to which it is linked in teaching and research. 2. To consider the current and long-term financial position of, and funding arrangements for, the department, and its financial strategy.

APPOINTMENTSProfessorship of Materials ModellingNICOLA MARZARI, LAUREA Trieste, PH.D Camb, Associate Professor of Computational Materials Science, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA, has been appointed to the Professorship of Materials Modelling in the Department of Materials with effect from 1 February 2010. Professor Marzari will be a fellow of St Anne's College. Conferment of the Title of Visiting ProfessorThe Medical Sciences Board has conferred the title of Visiting Professor in Neurosciences on P. QUIRION, B.SC M.SC PH.D Sherbrooke, currently Vice-Dean, Life Sciences and Strategic Initiatives, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, for three years from 1 November 2009.
