GENERAL NOTICES

Appointment of High Steward

Under the provisions of Stat. IX, Sect. 6, cl. (1), the Chancellor has appointed THE RT HON. THE LORD RODGER OF EARLSFERRY, PC, LL.B MA Glas, MD D.PHIL DCL Oxf, FBA, Visitor of St Hugh's College, Honorary Fellow of Balliol College and New College, as High Steward of the University with effect from 1 October 2008 on the retirement from the office of High Steward of The Rt Hon. the Lord Bingham of Cornhill, PC, MA DCL(Hon) Oxf, Honorary Fellow of Balliol and Nuffield Colleges.

David Phillips Professorship of Molecular Biophysics

Dr David Barford has withdrawn his acceptance of the appointment to the professorship.

St John's College

Piano recital

IMOGEN COOPER will perform piano works by Schubert (Klavierstücke no. 3, D.946; Sonata in A minor, D.845; and Sonata in D major, D.850) at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 29 October, in the Auditorium, St John's College.

Admission is by free programme, available from the college lodge ten days before the event.

APPOINTMENTS

Headship of the Department of Statistics

The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Divisional Board has conferred the Headship of the Department of Statistics as follows: upon PROFESSOR C.J.H. MCDIARMID, MA M.SC D.PHIL Oxf, University Lecturer in Operational Research and Fellow of Corpus Christi College, for a further period of two terms from 1 September 2008; and upon PROFESSOR S.L. LAURITZEN, M.SC PH.D D.SC Copenhagen, MA Oxf, Professor of Statistics and Fellow of Jesus College, for three years and one term from 1 April 2009.

Recognition of Distinction

On behalf of the Recognition of Distinction Committee, the Vice-Chancellor has conferred the title of Reader in Astrophysics upon DR ANDREW BUNKER, BA D.PHIL Oxf, University Lecturer in Astrophysics and Fellow of St Catherine's College, with effect from 1 September 2008.

On behalf of the Recognition of Distinction Committee, the Vice-Chancellor has conferred the title of Reader in Sociology upon DR O. SULLIVAN, BA Durh, M.SC PH.D Lond, Deputy Director of the Centre for Time Use, from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2013.

Conferments and Reconferments of the Title of Visiting Professor

The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board has conferred the title of Visiting Professor in Physics upon DR JULIAN BARBOUR, BA Camb, PH.D Cologne, for three years from 1 September 2008.

The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board has conferred the title of Visiting Professor in Materials Modelling upon PROFESSOR RALF DRAUT, DR.RER.NAT, DIPL. PHYS, Director, ICAMS, Ruhr- Universität Bochum, for three years from 1 September 2008.

The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board has reconferred the title of Visiting Professor in Computer Science upon PROFESSOR RICHARD BRENT, B.SC D.SC Monash, PH.D Stanford, for a further period of three years from 1 September 2008.

The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board has reconferred the title of Visiting Professor in Engineering Science upon PROFESSOR STEPHAN JEFFERIS, MA Camb, M.SC PH.D Lond, for two years from 1 September 2008.

The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board has reconferred the title of Visiting Professor in Software Engineering upon PROFESSOR MARTYN THOMAS, B.SC Lond, D.SC(HON) Hull, for a further period of three years from 1 September 2008.
