COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITYChanges in RegulationsCouncil has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 10 October. Nominations CommitteeIn Council Regulations 15 of 2002 (Supplement (1) to Gazette No. 4634, 16 October 2002) concerning the Nominations Committee (made by Council on 15 November 2007, Gazette, Vol. 138, p. 316), delete existing regulation 3.82 (2) (c) and substitute (new text underlined): '(c) Council shall consider all recommendations received from the Nominations Committee and shall either propose one candidate for each vacancy for approval by Congregation or shall ask the committee to submit further names for its consideration;'. [These changes reflect the original intention of Council that only one candidate per vacancy be submitted to Congregation. The failure to make this explicit has come to light in the course of preparing changes to the regulations concerning the conduct of business in Congregation to specify the procedure for Congregation approval of the nomination of external members of Council as required by the resolution of November 2007 (see 'University Agenda'.).]
PLANNING AND RESOURCE ALLOCATION COMMITTEE OF COUNCILChanges in RegulationsThe Planning and Resource Allocation Committee of Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 10 October. (a) Establishment of Glaxo Professorship of Cellular Pathology1 In SCHEDULE A of Council Regulations 3 of 2004, concerning statutory professorships, before 'E.P. Abraham Professor of Chemical Pathology' insert: 'Glaxo Professor of Cellular Pathology'. 2 In Sect. III of Council Regulations 24 of 2002, concerning individual professorships (Statutes, 2000, p. 480, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 244 as follows and renumber existing §§ 244–278 as §§ 245–279: '§ 244. Glaxo Professor of Cellular Pathology1. The University accepts with gratitude funding from Glaxo Holdings PLC for the establishment of a Glaxo Professorship of Cellular Pathology in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology and for the provision of supporting costs for the professorship. 2. The University shall retain all of the benefaction as permanent endowment and shall apply the net income towards the salary and other costs of the holder of the Professorship. 3. The administration of the benefaction, and the application of its income, shall be the responsibility of the Medical Sciences Board. 4. The Glaxo Professor of Cellular Pathology shall undertake research in Cellular Pathology and shall lecture and give instruction in this subject. 5. The professor shall be elected by an electoral board consisting of: (1) the Vice-Chancellor, or, if the head of the college specified in (2) of this regulation is Vice- Chancellor, a person appointed by Council on the occurrence of a vacancy to act as an elector on this occasion; (2) the head of the college to which the professorship shall be for the time being allocated by Council under any regulation in that behalf, or, if the head is unable or unwilling to act, a person appointed by the governing body of the college on the occurrence of a vacancy to act as an elector on that occasion; (3) a person appointed by the governing body of the college specified in (2) of this clause; (4), (5) two persons appointed by Council; (6)–(9) four persons appointed by the Medical Sciences Board. 6. The professor shall be subject to the General Provisions of the regulations concerning the duties of professors and to those Particular Provisions of the same regulations which are applicable to this chair. 7. Regulations 4–6 above may be amended by Council.' [These changes, made on the recommendation of the Medical Sciences Board, formally establish the Glaxo Professorship of Cellular Pathology, which was endowed by Glaxo Holdings PLC in 1991.] (b) Establishment of Professorship of Mathematical Modelling1 In SCHEDULE A of Council Regulations 3 of 2004, concerning statutory professorships, before 'Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics' insert: 'Professor of Mathematical Modelling'. 2 In Sect III of Council Regulations 24 of 2002, concerning individual professorships (Statutes, 2000, p. 464, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461) insert new § 206 as follows and renumber existing § 206–78 as § 211–79: '§ 206. Professor of Mathematical Modelling1. There shall be a Professor of Mathematical Modelling, who shall undertake research in and shall lecture and give instruction in that subject and generally promote its study in the University. 2. The professor shall be elected by an electoral board consisting of: (1) the Vice-Chancellor, or, if the head of the college specified in (2) of this regulation is Vice- Chancellor, a person appointed by Council; (2) the head of the college to which the professorship shall be for the time being allocated by Council under any regulation in that behalf, or if the head is unable or unwilling to act, a person appointed by the governing body of the college; (3) a person appointed by the governing body of the college specified in (2) of this regulation; (4), (5) two persons appointed by Council; (6)–(9) four persons appointed by the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board. 4. The professor shall be subject to the General Provisions of the regulations concerning the duties of professors and to those Particular Provisions of the same regulations which are applicable to this chair.' [These changes, made on the recommendation of the Planning and Resource Allocation Committee of Council, establish a Professorship of Mathematical Modelling held in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division. The Professor will teach and undertake research in Mathematical Modelling and will be on the establishment of the Mathematical Institute in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division.]
