COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY

Education Committee (corrigendum)

When the changes to the regulations implementing the change of name of the Educational Policy and Standards Committee to the Education Committee were published (Gazette, Vol. 138, p. 1168–9, 29 May 2008), a change to the regulations concerning the Continuing Education Board was omitted:

In Council Regulations 15 of 2002, concerning committees reporting directly to Council (Supplement (1) to Gazette No. 4634, 16 October 2002, p. 226, as amended on 23 March 2006 and 7 June 2007, Gazette, Vol. 136, p. 836; Vol. 137, p. 1254), in regulation 3.35 (1),(2) delete 'Educational Policy and Standards and Planning and Resource Allocation Committees' and substitute 'Education and Planning and Resource Allocation Committees'.


Changes in Regulations

Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 31 October.

(a) His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Professorship in Contemporary Islamic Studies

1 In SCHEDULE A of Council Regulations 3 of 2004, concerning statutory professorships, before 'Nissan Professor of Modern Japanese Studies' insert:

'His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Professor in Contemporary Islamic Studies'.

2 In Sect. III of Council Regulations 24 of 2002, concerning individual professorships (Statutes, 2000, p. 444, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 149 as follows and renumber existing §§ 149–154 as §§ 150–155:

'1. The benefaction from The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development which comprises £2,390,000, together with any further donations for this purpose, shall be used to establish and maintain a new and permanent Professorship in Contemporary Islamic Studies, under the aegis of the Faculty of Oriental Studies to be known as the His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Professorship in Contemporary Islamic Studies.

2. The University shall retain all of the benefaction as permanent endowment and shall apply the net income of this benefaction towards the support of this Professorship.

3. The His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Professorship in Contemporary Islamic studies shall lecture and give instruction in contemporary Islamic studies and thought.

4. The application of the income from the administration of the Fund held on behalf of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, shall be the responsibility of a Board of Management comprising:

(1) the Chairman of the Board of the Faculty of Oriental Studies (Chair of Board of Management);

(2) the HH Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Professor in Contemporary Islamic Studies;

(3), (4) two members appointed by the Board of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

5. The Professorship shall be elected by an electoral board consisting of:

(1) the Vice-Chancellor, or his representative;

(2) the head of the college to which the Professorship is to be allocated by Council;

(3) a person appointed by the governing body of the college to which the Professorship is to be allocated by Council;

(4) the Director of the Middle East Centre, St Antony's College;

(5), (6) two persons appointed by Council;

(7) the Head of the Humanities Division, or his or her nominee;

(8), (9) two persons appointed by the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

6. The Professor shall be subject to the General Provisions of the regulations concerning the duties of professors and to those Particular Provisions of the same regulations, which are applicable to the Professorship.

7. Regulations 1 and 2 shall be deemed as Trust Regulations under the provisions of Part D of Statute XVI.

8. Regulations 4–7 may be amended by Council.'

[These changes, made on the recommendation of the Humanities Board, establish a professorship in contemporary Islamic studies under the aegis of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, with the support of a benefaction from The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.]

GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL

Changes in Regulations

The General Purposes Committee of Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 31 October.

(a) Establishment of Bodleian Bequests Fund

In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002, concerning trusts (Statutes, 2000, p. 598, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 30 as follows and renumber existing §§ 30–99 as §§ 31–100:

'§ 30. Bodleian Bequests Fund

1. A Bodleian Bequests Fund shall be created, into which shall be deposited bequests for the general support of the Bodleian Library.

2. Bodley's Librarian, on behalf of the curators of University Libraries, shall maintain a Register of all bequests included within the Fund.

3. The Bodleian Library shall use the Fund for purposes in support of the Bodleian Library.

4. The administration of the Fund shall be the responsibility of the Curators of University Libraries, who shall establish a Board of Management comprising:

(1) Bodley's Librarian or his or her nominee;

(2) a senior member of the library staff, designated by Bodley's Librarian; and

(3) the chairman of the Curators of University Libraries or his or her nominee.

5. Regulations 1, 2 and 4 above may be amended by Council.'

[These regulations establish the Bodleian Bequests Fund for the support of the Bodleian Library.]


(b) Establishment of Ahmet Ertegun Memorial Scholarship

In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002 (Statutes, 2000, p. 629, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 98 as follows and renumber existing §§ 98–99 as §§ 99–100:

'§ 98.The Ahmet Ertegun Memorial Scholarship

1. The benefaction from the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund which comprises £803,715 together with any further donations for this purpose, shall create a new, permanent, scholarship fund for undergraduate students of Turkish descent, for any undergraduate course at the University, excluding Medicine, under the aegis of the Student Funding Services Office.

2. The University shall retain all of the benefaction as permanent endowment and shall apply the net income of this benefaction towards the support of this Scholarship.

3. The administration of the Fund, and the application of its income, shall be the responsibility of the Enhanced Bursary Committee.

4. Regulation 3 above may be amended by Council.'

[These changes, made on the recommendation of the Academic Administration Division, establish the Ahmet Ertegun Memorial Scholarship.]
