University Lecturerships in English Literature of the Nineteenth and Twentieth–Twenty-first Centuries

In association with Mansfield College and Queen's College

The University proposes to appoint two University Lecturers in English Literature of the Nineteenth and Twentieth–Twenty-first Centuries, from 1 September 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter. One post will be associated with a tutorial fellowship at Mansfield College and will have a research focus on nineteenth-century English literature. The second post will be associated with a tutorial fellowship at the Queen's College and will have a research focus on twentieth--twenty-first century English literature. Both post-holders will be expected to teach undergraduates across the two periods (1800 to the present day). An additional research and teaching interest in American or world literature may be an advantage. Salary will be on a combined university and college scale up to a maximum of £56,917 per annum. Significant additional college allowances are set out in the further particulars.

The successful candidates will have an excellent record of teaching and research in the relevant period. Each post-holder will be required to provide thirty-six lectures per year or equivalent (in seminars and classes) for the English Faculty; to provide, for every week of full term, six hours per week of tutorial teaching or equivalent for the college; to undertake examining and graduate supervision; and to contribute to administration in the college and faculty.

Further particulars, which all applicants are asked to consult, can be downloaded from the Web site www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp/ or from the Faculty Web site, www.english.ox.ac.uk.

Applicants are invited to apply for either or both of the posts, although separate applications should be made for each post, and applicants should make it clear in their application, which post they are applying for. Applications, including a curriculum vitae, a list of principal publications, and the names of three referees, should be sent by post to the English Faculty Office, St Cross Building, Manor Road, Oxford OX1 3UQ or by e-mail to english.office@ell.ox.ac.uk for receipt no later than noon on Friday 12 December. Candidates wishing to have an informal discussion about either of the posts may contact Dr Sally Mapstone, Chair of the English Faculty Board (e-mail: sally.mapstone@ell.ox.ac.uk, telephone: Oxford (2)81146).
