COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY

1 Changes in Regulations

Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 26 June.

(a) University Discipline

No notice of opposition having been received, Mr Vice-Chancellor will declare the Legislative Proposal concerning Statute XI approved without holding a meeting of Congregation (see 'University Agenda' below). Council has accordingly made the following consequential changes in regulations.

1 In regulation 2 of Council Regulations 2 of 2006 concerning disciplinary investigations by the Proctors under Statute XI (Gazette, Vol. 136, p. 1153–1163, 1 June 2006), delete 'sections 22, 23, 24, 36, 39 and 42' and substitute 'sections 21, 22, 23, 35, 38 and 41'.

2 Ibid., in regulation 5 (4) delete 'Code of Discipline set out in Statute XI' and substitute 'sections 2–6 of Statute XI'.

29 These changes in regulations shall be effective from 1 October 2009.

[These amendments make consequential changes to the regulations that refer to Statute XI, following approval of changes to that statute (see 'University Agenda' below).]


(b) Attendance at Council (corrigendum)

When Her Majesty in Council approved changes to Statute VI on 8 May 2003 (Gazette, Vol. 133, p. 1335, 29 May 2003), which altered the numbering of the paragraphs setting out the membership of Council, consequential changes to Council Regulations 13 of 2002 were overlooked. 1 In regulation 1 of Council Regulations 13 of 2002 concerning attendance at Council (Supplement (2) To Gazette No. 4628, 26 June 2002), delete 'section 4 (6), (11)–(14), or (17)–(23) of Statute VI' and substitute 'section 4 (6) or (15)–(25) of Statute VI'.

2 Dates of Extended Terms 2009–10 (corrigendum)

Honour School of Chemistry: Part II candidates in Chemistry

The end-date of the extended Hilary Term 2010, for the Honour School of Chemistry: Part II Candidates in Chemistry, was given incorrectly in the Gazette of 12 March (p. 758). The extended term will end on Wednesday, 31 March (and not on Wednesday, 7 April, as previously published).

GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL

Changes in Regulations

The General Purposes Committee of Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 26 June.

(a) Gotch Memorial Fund

In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002 (Statutes, 2000, p. 643, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), delete existing § 132.2 and substitute:

'2. The income of the fund shall be applied to the establishment of a prize to be called the Gotch Memorial Prize and to the payment of all expenses concerned in the award thereof. The prize shall consist of one year's income of the fund after the deduction of any expenses of administration. It shall be awarded annually by the board of management to such person, being a member of the University, who is a graduate student in the field of Physiology with the best D.Phil transfer of status report.'

[These changes, made on the recommendation of the Gotch Memorial Fund Board of Management, amend the conditions of the award so that a graduate student in the field of Physiology may be eligible for the prize based upon the best D.Phil transfer of status report, in order that a greater number of students will be eligible to apply for the prize in the future.]


(b) Establishment of the Sybille Haynes Fund for Etruscan and Early Italic Studies

In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002, concerning trusts (Statutes, 2000, p. 608, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 148 as follows, and renumber existing §§ 148–168 as §§ 149–169:

'§ 148. Sybille Haynes Fund for Etruscan and Early Italic Studies

1. The recent benefaction from Dr Sybille Haynes, MBE, together with any further donations for this purpose, shall be known as 'The Sybille Haynes Fund For Etruscan And Early Italic Studies'.

2. The University shall retain all of the Fund as permanent endowment and shall apply the net income of the Fund towards the following purposes:

(1) the support of a permanent University Lecturership at Oxford in Etruscan and Early Italic Studies;

(2) if there are insufficient funds to support a lecturership, or there are surplus funds, and at the discretion of the Board of Management, academic activities to promote and support purpose (1), including an annual Sybille Haynes Lecture in Etruscan and Early Italic Studies, and academic support for the holder of the Lecturership, such as the provision of Graduate Scholarships.

3. The administration of the Fund, and the application of its income, shall be the responsibility of a Board of Management comprising:

(1) The Lincoln Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology;

(2) The Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire;

(3, 4) two representatives nominated from the Sub-faculty of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology, comprising a permanent post-holder in Ancient History and a permanent post-holder in Classical Archaeology;

(5, 6) two representatives appointed by the Governing Body of Somerville College.

4. The Board may co-opt up to three external members for periods of two years who shall be eligible for re-appointment and shall include the donor during her lifetime.

5. Regulations 1, 3 and 4 above may be amended by Council.'

[These regulations establish the Sybille Haynes Fund for Etruscan and Early Italic Studies in connection with the Classics Faculty.]


(c) Establishment of the Classics Faculty Ioannou Centre General Trust

In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002, concerning trusts (Statutes, 2000, p. 608, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 57 as follows, and renumber existing §§ 57–113 as §§ 58–114:

'§ 57. Classics Faculty Ioannou Centre General Trust

1. The residue of a donation from the family of Mr S. Ioannou for the purpose of establishing the Ioannou Centre, together with any further donations for the general purposes of the Faculty of Classics, shall be known as 'The Classics Faculty Ioannou Centre General Trust'.

2. The University shall retain all of the Fund as permanent endowment and shall apply the net income of the Fund towards the furtherance of the academic purposes of the Faculty of Classics.

3. The administration of the Fund, and the application of its income, shall be the responsibility of the Board of the Faculty of Classics.

4. Regulations 1 and 3 above may be amended by Council.'

[These regulations establish the Classics Faculty Ioannou Centre General Trust in connection with the Faculty of Classics.]
