Scholarships and Prizes 2008: Philosophy

John Locke Prize in Mental Philosophy 2008

An examination for this prize will be held in Michaelmas Term 2008 (date and venue will be confirmed in due course). The value of the prize will be £500. The examiners have power to award the sum of at least £200 to the proxime accessit if, and only if, they would have judged him or her worthy of the prize had there not been a better candidate. Other awards may be made for excellence in a part of the examination.

The examination will be open to members of the University who either:

(a) have passed all the examinations requisite for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts of the University, provided that they may not take the examination later than the tenth term from that in which they completed the said examinations; or

(b) are working for, or have obtained, postgraduate degrees of the University, but are not included under (a), except that they may not take the examination later than the tenth term from their matriculation.

The prize may not be awarded twice to the same person.

The following papers will be set:

1. Philosophical questions (9.30 a.m.–12.30 p.m). Including questions in logic, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, and ethics.

2. Essay (2.30–5.30 p.m). As above.

Candidates must request entry forms from, and return them to, the Graduate Studies Administrator, Faculty of Philosophy, 10 Merton Street, Oxford OX1 4JJ.

Completed entry forms must be submitted on or before 29 October 2008.
