instituto Camões Centre for Portuguese Language
Intensive Course in Portuguese
The Camões Centre will hold a two-week intensive course in basic Portuguese for students and staff of the University.
The course will be held on weekdays from 2 July to 16 July, and will focus on the basics of Portuguese grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. A two-hour class will be held daily (10 a.m.–12 noon). The course fee is £30.
Ten places are available. Those interested should register by 27 June, via e-mail, to Catarina Fouto (email@example.com).
University Counselling Service
From Monday, 23 June, to Friday, 3 October, the University Counselling Service will be open 9.30 a.m.–1.30 p.m., Monday–Friday.
From noughth week (Monday, 6 October) onwards, the opening times will be the usual hours, 9.15 a.m.–5.15 p.m., Monday–Friday.
Weidenfeld Visiting Professor of European Comparative Literature 2008–9
MARJORIE PERLOFF, PH.D Catholic University of America, Sadie Dernham Patek Professor of Humanities Emerita, Stanford University, and Scholar-in-Residence, University of Southern California, has been appointed to the visiting professorship for the academic year 2008–9. She will deliver her lectures on dates to be arranged in Trinity Term 2009.
The professorship is associated with St Anne's College.
Directorship of the Computing Laboratory
The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board has conferred the Directorship of the Computing Laboratory upon PROFESSOR STEPHEN PULMAN, MA PH.D Essex, MA Oxf, FBA, Professor of Computational Linguistics and Fellow of Somerville College, during Professor Roscoe's sabbatical leave for one year from 1 October 2008.
Recognition of Distinction
The Vice-Chancellor has conferred the following title on behalf of the Recognition of Distinction Committee:
A.J. BUNKER, MA, D.PHIL Oxf, University Lecturer in Astrophysics and Fellow of St Catherine's College: Reader in Astrophysics, with effect from 1 April 2008.
Conferments and Reconferment of the Title of Visiting Professor
On the recommendation of the History Faculty Board, the Humanities Board has conferred the title of Visiting Professor on FRANCIS CHRISTOPHER ROWLAND ROBINSON, CBE, BA PH.D Camb, Professor of the History of South Asia, Royal Holloway, University of London, for three years from 1 October 2008.
The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board has conferred the title of Visiting Professor in Mechanical Engineering on DAVID RUGG, B.SC Birm, PH.D Sheff, FIM, C.ENG), Senior Materials Specialist, Rolls-Royce plc, for three years from 1 July 2008.
The Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board has reconferred the title of Visiting Professor in Physics on PROFESSOR EDMUND WILSON, Honorary Staff Member of the Accelerator and Beams Department, CERN, for three years from 1 January 2009.
