CONGREGATION 19 February 2 p.m.

¶ Members of Congregation are reminded that written notice of any intention to vote against any of the resolutions below, signed in each case by at least two members of Congregation, must be given to the Registrar by noon on Monday, 11 February (see the note on the conduct of business in Congregation at the end of 'University Agenda').

Voting on Resolutions approving the conferment of Honorary Degrees

(1) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa, upon MONTEK SINGH AHLUWALIA, BA Delhi, MA M.PHIL Oxf, Economist and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Government of India, Rhodes Scholar and Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, be approved.

(2) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, upon PROFESSOR THOMAS NAGEL, BA Cornell, B.PHIL Oxf, PH.D Harvard, FBA, Philosopher, Professor of Philosophy and Law, New York University, Honorary Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, be approved.

(3) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, upon PROFESSOR BERT SAKMANN, Staatsexamen Munich, MD Göttingen, Cell Physiologist, Director of the Department of Cell Biology and Professor of Physiology, Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, Foreign Member of the Royal Society, Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), be approved.

(4) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, upon PROFESSOR SHEILA EVANS WIDNALL, B.SC MS SC.D MIT, F.R.AE.S., FAAAS, FAIAA, FAPS, Institute Professor and Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Former United States Secretary of the Air Force, Former Vice-President and Member of the National Academy of Engineering, be approved.

(5) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, upon PROFESSOR ADA YONATH, B.SC M.SC Hebrew University, PH.D Weizmann Institute of Science, Crystallographer, Martin S. and Helen Kimmel Professor of Structural Biology and Director of the Helen and Milton A. Kimmelman Center for Biomolecular Structure and Assembly, Weizmann Institute of Science, Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), Member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, be approved.

(6) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa, upon DAME CAROLYN EMMA KIRKBY, OBE, MA Oxf, FGSM, FRCM, Hon. FRAM, Hon. FTCL, Soprano and Proponent of Early Music, be approved.

¶ If the resolutions are approved, the honorary degrees will be conferred at the Encaenia on 18 June 2008.
